Encouraging rabbits to eat hay can be tricky, but cutting down on other foods e.g treats, pellets and vegetables may help.
Try adding new things to your rabbits hay like other types of hay e.g meadow hay, timothy hay or oat grass. You can buy dried herbs to add to your hay too, to create a forage which may encourage your rabbit to eat hay.
Sometimes, if you have a single rabbit, bonding him/her with a rabbit who does eat hay can encourage your rabbit to eat hay as he/she will see their partner eating hay and will decide they’d like to eat hay, too!
Don’t completely eliminate everything else from your rabbits diet though. Often people will say “your rabbit won’t starve himself” but this really is not the case and often times rabbits WILL starve themselves to avoid eating hay, so make sure to monitor your rabbits weight to make sure he/she does not drastically lose weight.
Sometimes rabbits will also not eat hay as they may have over grown teeth. This is a huge problem in rabbits and requires a vet trip to have the incisors or molars burred down and in some cases the teeth will have to be removed if they do not correct themselves.
